The Unfiltered Guide to Spiti Valley in Winter: Snow, Permits & Cold Truths
Spiti Valley in winter is not a vacation — it is a pilgrimage into extreme silence. Between December and March, temperatures routinely dip to -25°C. The rivers freeze into glass, the roads narrow into corridors of pure ice, and the summer tourist crowds disappear entirely. If you have ever wondered what it takes to experience White Spiti safely, here is the unfiltered reality from someone who navigates it every year. ### 1. The Route: Forget Rohtang & Kunzum In winter, the Manali-Kaza highway via Rohtang and Kunzum Pass is buried under 15 feet of snow and remains shut. The only open gateway into Spiti is via Shimla, Kinnaur, Reckong Peo, Nako, and Tabo. It is a long, 2-day driving approach, but it allows your body to acclimatize gradually to the rising altitude. ### 2. The Golden Rule of 4x4 & Chains Do not attempt winter Spiti in a front-wheel-drive hatchback or standard 2WD vehicle. Black ice on the road from Tabo to Kaza is invisible. You need a dedicated 4x4 with snow chains, an experienced mountain driver who understands engine idling in sub-zero weather, and anti-freeze coolant. ### 3. Dry Toilets & Homestay Life Hot running water does not exist in Spiti in winter — pipes freeze solid. You will be staying in traditional mud-brick homestays with wood-fired Bukhari stoves in the living room and using dry composting toilets. This is not an inconvenience; it is centuries-old sustainable mountain living that keeps locals thriving in extreme cold. ### 4. What to Pack - **Layer 1:** Merino wool thermal top and bottoms (at least 2 sets). - **Layer 2:** Heavy fleece and woolen sweater. - **Layer 3:** -20°C rated down jacket with windproof outer shell. - **Footwear:** Waterproof snow boots with aggressive grip. Normal sneakers will lead to frostbite. - **Power:** External power banks — phone batteries drain in 15 minutes in sub-zero air. Keep electronics inside your jacket pocket close to body heat. Spiti in winter will humble you, change your perspective on comfort, and show you some of the purest starry nights on Earth.
